Scuba Diving
Thailand with its long coastline and clear waters offers great opportunities for scuba diving in both the Andaman Sea, and the Gulf of Thailand. October to April is the best time to dive in the Andaman Sea, and May to September in the Gulf of Thailand. The water temperature range from 27C to 31C. The Similan Islands, 100 kilometers northwest of Phuket, are often rated as one of the top 10 dive destinations in the world. The islands became a National Park in 1982. Similans most famous dive sites are Beacon Reef, Elephant Head, East of Eden, and Christmas Point. Leopard sharks, manta rays, and a large number of small fish species are waiting to be explored at the Similans. The dive sites Shark Point and Anemone Reef lies about 25 kilometer east of Phuket, and is the most popular day dive trip from Phuket. The visibility at this two sites is not the best, but the high density of fish makes the diving to a fantastic experience. Barracudas, gorgonian sea fans, leopard sharks, and plenty of small fish can be found at this dive sites. Thailand also offer excellent opportunities for diving in wrecks. The most popular wreck dives are: King Cruiser - a passenger ferry between Phuket and Phi-Phi Islands which sank at the Anemone Reef; Hardeep - an Indonesian ship which went down a few hundred meters from the island Koh Chuang near Pattaya; Petchburi Bremen - a Thai freighter which sank near Sattahip village south of Pattaya; Khram - a warship which lies about 300 meters from Koh Phai near Pattaya; Vertical Wreck - a tanker which went down 50 kilometers west of Koh Chang in Trat; Bangsak - an old tin mining boat which sank in the Andaman Sea near Khao Lak; HMS Vestal - a British minesweeper which sank 1945 off Phuket's southern coast; SS Petaling - a Singaporean steamboat which lies off Kata Beach.
